Oscar Winners For A Day

by

Michelle HechtIt seems like only yesterday we found gold, but it was of all times St. Patrick’s Day. Unfortunately, we couldn’t keep it.

The treasure, in the form of two Oscars, belonged to Antioch native Michael Semanick. A guest that day on the “Bay Area Today at Ten,” he discussed his wins for sound mixing the movies “Lord of the Rings: Return of the King” and “King Kong.”

Soon after the interview, quite a few of us couldn’t wait to speak with the Academy Award winner. Semanick took the time to meet every one of his admirers and even let us pose with the statuettes for photos. The prevailing sentiment: this could be our only chance to hold an Oscar.

It’s always exciting to learn of the guests for any given day. We’ve had everyone from gardening gurus, chefs, comedians, actors and authors to politicians, military personnel, doctors, animal caretakers and remarkable community members.

I’m still crossing my fingers for Sir Paul McCartney. So far, he hasn’t been scheduled as a guest, but that would definitely be my pot of gold at the end of the rainbow. And if the rain decides to return, a rainbow doesn’t seem too farfetched.
