Paper or Plastic?

Brent Cannon

San Francisco is going plastic-less. They banned plastic bags at large grocery stores and pharmacies. I guess people are concerned about how non-biodegradable plastic impacts the environment. Most stores say they will probably stop offering plastic bags and just go with paper. So, here’s my dilemma. When I was a kid there was no such thing as plastic bags. We only had paper. Then, along came plastic, and people trying to save the trees said we needed to use plastic instead. Opponents argued plastic takes like a million years to decompose. But people just kind of went – whatever – and plastic became the “thing.” Now, plastic is bad and stores are going all paper. I know the goal is to get stores to provide bags made of other fabric – but stores say it’s too expensive so they’ll offer paper. Go figure. Back to square one.
