Alaska Coup?

Scott McGrewSo just moments after it was announced that former sports reporter, former commercial fisherman Sarah Palin was going to be the Republican candidate for Vice President, I was able to find this picture.  It’s my son Zach, acting as temporary Governor of Alaska.

A couple of details:

1) Alaska didn’t know Zach was actually Governor.
2) The door to the Governor’s office was unlocked.

The state capitol of Alaska is a small building in Juneau; it looks nothing like a regular capitol.    Zach and I stopped in while on a cruise up in the Inside Passage a couple years ago.  Zach felt that the visit to the Alaskan state capitol didn’t quite measure up to our helicopter trip to Mendenhall Glacier, or our salmon fishing in a nearby fijord.  In fact, the thought the capitol was “lame.”

And it was.  There was nobody there – apparently the state largely runs itself – and they also apparently don’t have a strong focus on security.  If you look closely at the picture, it appears someone has stolen the state seal.  So in the attempts to be less lame, we decided to take over the governorship.  Zach still thought it was lame, which is why you see the expression on his face that says “Dad, get this over with and let’s go find some dogsleds.”
