New Year’s Cravings

January 6, 2009

Laura Garcia Cannon:
Laura Garcia CannonYou know that New Year’s is here, not just because all the sales on half price 2009 calendars at the mall kiosk, but all the ads on how to lose weight. Beat the diet monster, have you called Jenny yet? I heard there’s a new Atkins diet that now lets you eat carbs! Wasn’t the lack of eating carbs that made this diet famous and successful for some? Meat, bacon, lamb shanks oh my! Add a piece of bread? It’s just not Atkins anymore! So the “no carb” is now “some carb,” and when I looked up the “low fat” – I also found the “full fat” diet! No kidding, whole milk, cheese.. Mmm can I dish up a nice bowl of ice cream on that one? Is there a hot fudge diet? Maybe I should patent that one now. I do remember seeing a book at the checkout line on the peanut butter diet, I bet Homer Simpson has the “Du-ohnut diet.” Just follow it up with the detox diet and we’ll call it good. Three day diet, Zone diet, Mediterranean diet, South Beach diet, Grapefruit diet, cabbage soup diet, Hollywood diet oh my. I don’t even want to go on a diet but it’s amazing how many there are out there, makes me hungry for some reason.

Chip Steals the Show

December 8, 2008

Laura Garcia Cannon:
Laura Garcia CannonOh what fun it is to ride… in a convertible classic cherry red Ford Mustang! Brent and I were treated to a ride in one of the classic cars from the South Bay’s Mustang and Thunderbird car club this weekend for the San Jose Holiday Parade. brent-laura-paradeIt’s always a fun event and this year the weather was great! Brent and I bundled up and headed out the door a little earlier than usual because we had a little guest, our dog Chip joining us. When I went to his little cabinet drawer where I keep his food, treats, sweaters, he knew something was up. I pulled out a Santa outfit and he started running around like crazy. He knew we were going somewhere. We piled in the car and before you knew it we were downtown where we greeted the rest of the morning crew – Scott McGrew, Mike Inouye with his son Mason and Craig Herrera with his dog Sasha!

We were all quickly shuttled over to the HP Pavilion where we got into our appointed cars and waited for the parade to start. Wfloathen it did – I don’t think Chip knew what hit him! So many people lining the parade route… And screaming his name! His little puppy head was whipping back and forth, right and left ever time it was shouted. It was really funny, but I think he was wondering where in the heck we brought him. It was the perfect medicine for a hyper little terrier. Dancers, balloons, floats, Santa. By the time we got to the car he was ready to conk out. He was so tired. It made for a perfect afternoon for us to put up the Christmas Tree. No little puppy getting in the box of garland, he was asleep!

Would You Drink It?

November 12, 2008

Laura Garcia Cannon:
Laura Garcia CannonWe had quite a story on the air today.. Did you catch it? Let me recap – hope you’re not thirsty… here’s our script:

When astronauts onboard the space shuttle endeavor head to space on Friday… They’ll bring into orbit something most of us would rather not think about. A mini-sewage treatment plant will be delivered to the international space station. The new system will be efficient enough to turn fluids like urine – human sweat – and bath water, into drinking water! Water is at a premium up in space, and scientists say all moisture needs to be recycled, regardless of how gross the prospect sounds. Astronauts you’re in for a treat!

How is it that NASA would let this incredible technology story come out? Don’t they want to encourage children to join the space program? So it got us asking around in the newsroom, would you drink it? Well would you? I said I’d rather be dehydrated…

Cherishing Childhood

October 30, 2008

Laura Garcia Cannon:
Laura Garcia CannonI was in the grocery store the other day when I spotted a dinosaur. Right there in the baking isle just walking around. Then, in the drug store I saw a little cow. Plain as day, a little cow, mooving around. Am I loosing my mind? No, don’t commit me just yet. Remember, Halloween is right around the corner and one of my favorite things are the days leading up to the day.

This is for all those parents who buy the outfits early so the good one’s aren’t picked over! It makes sense. Your little bundle of joy is going to be the cutest little pumpkin or puppy or lamb around! But when it comes to trying that outfit on at home, watch out! That’s exactly what happened to my sister and her little girl. She brought home a little lamb outfit. Lauren tried it on and well, didn’t want to take it off! My sister called me half laughing, half distressed saying, “What do I do?” I could hear the little lamb shrieking for the full outfit in the background. (She already had the lamb head on). Well Aunt Laura was all for leaving it on.

There is something just so precious to me to see a little superman walking around with his cape, or a dragon with his long tail that just cracks me up. It’s childhood. It’s innocence. It’s not giving a care about what people think about you, you look like a lamb and that’s fun. There’s only a limited amount of life where you can live as carefree enough to go to the store dressed as a chicken. Adulthood will be here before you know it and then, we’ll that’s just not cute anymore.

Bears In There!

October 16, 2008

Laura Garcia Cannon:
Laura Garcia CannonEvery year I’m lucky enough to take a weekend dedicated to some of my best friends from college. There are nearly 10 of us that get together each year as long as schedules don’t conflict and babies aren’t being born (which is often in this group). Anyway, eight of us made it this year. We usually pick a different place to go every year and this year it was Tahoe.

We all drove up, flew in, whatever it took to all arrive on a Friday night. We decided to stay in the first night, make dinner together, get caught up in lots of joyful conversation. Three of the girls thought of some bear necessities they needed so they went out of the cabin through the garage because it was raining. We’re girls we don’t like to get our hair wet if we don’t have to. Anyway, they left the garage door up because they would be right back… and they were right back rather quickly, to FIND A BEAR IN THE GARAGE!!!!!

Three girls in an SUV with the lights shining on a bear trying to get into an empty garbage can!Three girls shrieking, “Get the phone, get the camera, somebody call them inside!!” I was part of the party inside the cabin, and quite frankly I’m glad they didn’t call us. What was I supposed to do? Go into the garage to ask the bear to leave? Can you imagine walking into that?

I don’t know if it was the shrieking inside the car or the headlights that made the bear look up, or maybe the thought there was a girls weekend going on (that could be scary for any male)… but the bear just decided to slowly walk away. The three girls came running in barely – no pun intended until after I wrote that- being able to breathe! I honestly couldn’t understand them.. They had to calm down from what they saw to be able to speak again. We all ran out to see the tracks and sure enough, there was the garbage pail lid turned on its side, wet paw prints on the floor. We put that garage door down!

I do have to admit it made us all think twice before we walked out the door later that weekend. Good thing girls like to talk – we stayed in a lot.

Brent’s Blog Part Two (Laura’s Perspective)

October 3, 2008

Laura Garcia Cannon:
Laura Garcia CannonI haven’t read Brent’s blog as I write this but the funny thing is (I heard through the grapevine) we both chose to blog about the same thing! I guess it’s not surprising, we share so much and think a lot alike. And the topic, well once again my friends (oh my, I’m sounding like John McCain) well, my friends, this blog once again is about our dog Chip! But it’s kind of cool. He posed for a magazine!

This month’s San Jose magazine. Celebrities (I don’t know about that part) and their dogs. It was actually a fun shoot at San Jose’s Fairmont Hotel. I think Brent went into the miracle of Chip even being there, but if he didn’t explain Chip’s “llama legs” as we call them, I will here. If you look closely at his little furry legs in the picture you’ll see they are shaved. Not a bad haircut, but it was because he had to have so many IV’s in his front legs as he recovered from a pretty bad fall this summer.

Thanks again to the doctors that saved his life and made life with our little man possible again. And thanks to the good folks at San Jose Magazine and the Fairmont San Jose for featuring the little guy who is the biggest celebrity in our household!

Hair Raising Situation

September 24, 2008

Laura Garcia Cannon:
Laura Garcia CannonI was in the makeup room the other day when Scott McGrew walked in, looked in the mirror and said, “Boy I need a haircut.” My first instinct was to offer to cut it. What was I thinking? I have zero haircutting experience. It made me laugh thinking of the same offer I made to my brother when I was about 15. He said he needed a haircut, and I jumped into action and said, oh let me do it! As if I had gone to beauty school! What is worse, that I offered? Or that he said yes? It would probably be the latter as I snipped a little here, snipped a little there. Oh no, I think I just made a hole. Uh.. Let me snip this part too so it’s not as obvious. .. Snip snip, snip.. Oh gosh this is getting worse. Then suddenly I exclaimed, “Uh… all done! And um, I have to go,” I had to get out of there before my brother could actually look in the mirror! I didn’t know I could run that fast! He didn’t have time to remove the makeshift ‘cape’ towel I put around him, before his sylist was out the door.

Recently my brother was visiting. He said, “I need a haircut.” For a second, I thought he was kidding and asked if he remembered my little ‘haircutting incident’ all those years before. Being either a good sport or just the wonderful brother that he is, he said no. But that got me thinking, maybe it wasn’t as bad as I thought! So yes, Scott McGrew, let me cut your hair! My salon is open and ready for appointments!

Badge or No Badge?

September 11, 2008

Laura Garcia Cannon:
Laura Garcia CannonIt’s funny the differences between the tastes of men and women. I bought a new jacket the other day and wasn’t too sure if it was going to work on air. I decided to model it for Brent. He immediately said… what’s your rank? The blazer has a big crest on it and I can tell that is the first thing he didn’t like about it. He said I looked like a police officer. I thought, well he might have a point. I carefully snipped the crest off, put the jacket back on and thought… BORING! It just looked like a plain off white jacket with black piping. So, I pinned the badge back on and wore it

Funny thing, when I got to work the staff had the same reaction. Scott McGrew said I was the commodore, Mike Inouye saluted me, my Executive Producer John Peck wanted to know where I got the badge? Ha ha.. But all the girls said, oh love the jacket, love the crest, leave it on! So, I wonder.. Are badges and crests a gender thing? Here’s a look at both looks…. Which do you prefer? We’re taking a poll… leave a comment.

Stand Up to Cancer

September 4, 2008

Laura Garcia Cannon:
Laura Garcia CannonIn this season of politics and divisiveness, here is something I think we can all agree on. We need to find a cure for cancer. It is a fight worth fighting.  As I mentioned in a previous blog, I lost my mother to cancer this year so it is very personal to me.  She was the light of the day, the heart of our home, and a beautiful woman with a deep love of family.  She fought her battle with cancer with strength, dignity and grace. She left us too young.

One out of three women, and one out of two men will be diagnosed with the deadly disease, but we are making great strides in early detection, research and medicine.

This Friday night all three major networks NBC, ABC and CBS will team up to stand up to cancer.  The one hour prime time special hopes to make history in the fight against the devastating epidemic. The show will be hosted by the three major network evening news anchors, Brian Williams, Charles Gibson and Katie Couric.  It will also feature starts such as Meryl Streep, Scarlett Johansson, Jack Black, Christina Applegate, Sheryl Crow, and oh yeah, me, Laura Garcia Cannon!  Watch for it… and stand up to cancer, Friday, 8PM right here on NBC Bay Area.
